For the 3rd Symposium running now, Blobpus has may wicked contributions to the Millennial Monsters series. For those who like their monsters large, there is this striking Dokugan in the classic MM colorway. This year marks the 100th birthday of Gardner Fox, one of the most influential comic writers of the 20th Century. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 20, 1911.

During the Golden Age of comics, he worked on Batman from Issue 3, contributing to the early development of the character, introducing such fundamentals as the Bat Utility Belt, the Batarang and the Batgyro (precursor to the Batcopter) He is also credited with creating Hawkman, the Flash and the Sandman. In 1940, in the third issue of All-Star Comics, he introduced the Justice Society, the first superhero team in comics. The graphics for this year's Global Figure Symposium are an homage to the cover art from this classic Golden Age Comic.

During the Silver Age, Fox's script for "Flash of Two Worlds!", from The Flash #123 (Sept. 1961), introduced the concept that the Golden Age heroes existed on a parallel Earth named Earth-Two. This introduces the concept of the Multiverse, allowing old and new heroes to co-exist and crossover. Where would modern comics be today with out the concept of parallel worlds???

Gardner Fox passed away December 24, 1986 here on Earth-One, but we have credible intelligence that he is celebrating his 100th on Earth-2 with an amazing birthday bash.

Cyberius.droid13 was originally created by Pr. Arkaroy at Kinetic Organic Laboratory (KO-lab). In an unfortunate lab accident, he went off his original programming becoming a rogue agent calling itself Cy'13 and engaging in dastardly acts of malice and mayhem. One of his hobbies is ripping huge holes in the fabric of the spacetime continuum just to see what happens. In one of these experiments, a shard of his being injected itself into the Mutant Zone colliding with a Mutant Vegetable known as Chaos. This resulted in the manifestation known as Cy'Os.

This version of Cy'Os - which I consider the "definitive colorway" - was released at Superfestival 55. There are a few pieces remaining so any interested parties should drop me a line at datadub(at)gmail.com.

Ultraman Zero -- the Movie --

Taking its cues from the spate of high-end superhero flicks pouring out of Hollywood, The Ultraman franchise has been upping its game with the last couple of Ultraman Movies. Since the beginning, most Ultraman series have been presented as a standalone takes on the overall series template - then they are slowly crossed over, sliced and diced and mix and munging with the series and characters that came before re-inventing the overall universe over and over.

But since the 40th anniversary Ultra Series - Ultraman Mebius - broadcast in 2006 - and the ensuing theatrical release - Ultraman Mebius & Ultraman Brothers, Tsuburaya has been slowly but surely tightening up the continuity. The original Showa Ultramen (1966 - 1980) are now part of the "Canon" as Continuity Geeks like to say. I should note that the 2008 movie - Superior Ultraman 8 Brothers - unfortunately was a bit of a misstep - using a clunky alternate universe plot device to mix and match Heisei Utramen Dyna, Tiga and Gaia with the old school Man, Ultra7, Jack and Ace with Mebius somehow in the middle - Inferior is more like it.

However I thought 2009's Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy was everything one should expect from a 21st century modern ultra-flick. A lot of it takes place on the Ultra homeworld. The villain was pretty bad-ass, the evil Ultraman Belial (he kind of looks like a McFarlane reject - but I still like the idea of an evil Ultraman). The new main Ultrahero - Ultraman Zero - is a bit of an rebel outcast which is a cool touch (as well as the son of Ultra Seven). And all the Showa Ultra-dudes have cool roles in the story.

I like the fact that they really just went for it and went over the top, instead of pussy-footing around. Considering that first and foremost these movies are for kids and are in someways just toy commercials on steroids - I am always pleased when the movies give copious nods to the old school. Hopefully the producers are realizing that there is a discerning secondary market in older guys who grew up with the stuff (or at least wish they had) and are open to take a chance to be entertained by this kind of fare.

The newest movie, called Ultraman Zero, the Movie was released theatrically this past December looks like it is following on in this gonzo vein. One thing that has piqued my interest are 3 new characters which are homages to 70's tokusatsu heros that were outside of the Ultra Pantheon.
They all show up in these teaser - see if you can figure out who is who!

This 7 inch Figure of the classic 70's Tsuburaya Hero Fireman is scheduled to be released at the next Superfestival in January. The Inspire company continues to release these classic Tokusatu heros in the size I like to call the Bandai Modern Standard. Every since the King Zaurus series by Popy in the late 1970's pioneered this form factor, this style of figure has become the standard issue for the entire line of Ultra Heros and Kamen Riders alike. While the mainstream heros and monsters of the Ultraman and Kamen Rider franchises are continuously mass produced in China by Bandai and sold for 600 - 900 yen in stores all over Japan by the thousands, and a few of the classic Toei heros such as Inazuman and Barom One have been released; there are alot of older classic 1970's Tsuburaya heroes that have never been done in this Modern Standard style. Sensing a gap that needs to be filled is often the purview of many small Independent Japanese Vinyl companies, and Inspire has been filling this gap. And while its sometimes to hard to justify the disconnect of a form factor that match mass market figures that sell for less than 10 bucks and the price tags one associates with indie vinyl - these figures retail for over $40, Inspire definitely delivers on what is sets out to do. So far they have released quality figures of classic heroes Mirror Man, Silver Kamen, Spectre Man, Gambaron and many other obscure characters from the deep pantheon of Japanese Heros.

Design festa 32 was a hoot

Another design festa has come on and gone. This was my 4th design festa from "the other side side of the table" as it were and as is the tradition now - I shared the experience and the booth with my good friends at Art Denka & Goccodo. New insights were gained (mini-booths rule- full booths are a waste), others were re-inforced (Saturday is far and away the day for figure sales. My sales were easily triple saturday what they were Sunday.) However it did seem like there were more actual people in the venue on Sunday. Small cheap stuff rules - while this seems to be the order of the day in the figure world in these Economically- challenged times this has always been the rule of thumb at Festa known as Design. Postcards, badges and stickers rule the day - I noticed alot of vinyl under the 1000 yen price point. It was still an amazing yet tiring weekend - I always see new friends, unexpected folks (Joe from squibbles ink!!) and discover something new.

Super Festival! Super Friends!

SuperFestival 54 has come and gone but it was definitely a BLAST! The long heat wave of summer had finally broken, and there seemed to be a better than average sized-crowd of folks in the house. Superfestival is by far my favorite toy event in Japan. Kaiju Korner has a really good blog entry about the event with tons of pics. (Yokoso to Japan Andy!)

Mori from Real x Head got us all a group booth that made a solid block of fun. So many new releases - seems like everyone in the crew had something new for sale. Participating in the block party were Real x Head, Cha-iro Brown (Shef & Tama-chan), Uamou, ArtDenka, Goccodo, Kaiju Blue, Nerd One, Dr. StrangeToys, Refreshment, Pop Soda, Copy Robot, Kowelly Town, Spooky Parade, Fig-lab, Atom A. Mirock Toy launches its website!

Mirock Toy has launched its official web site including a blog and an online shop. Mirock (pronounced Mee-Roh-Koo) leapt onto the the toy stage with a collaboration with Real x Head which debuted at San Diego Comic-con 2010. Sculpting in wood his wildly re-imagined sculpts of Real x Head's core Mutant Zone characters - Head, Evil and Chaos were a big hit at SDCC. The web store contains several online exclusives, including all black unpainted versions of the RxH collaboration figures and a very traditionally painted chaos. There are also resin minis of Mirock, the brand mascot. (seen above). This guy will be one to watch for sure.

The web store currently doesn't ship internationally.

The Global Figure Symposium 2010 - the CROSSOVER - was a smashing success - old friends, new alliances, familiar figures and radical re-imaginings were all in evidence.

A super big thanks to Matt Doughty from Onell Design and Jesse Moore from Rawshark Studios for giving up half (way more than half) of their booth for the event as well as being deep in the mix.

Here at Fig-lab we are continuously the monitoring the event horizon of the impending vortex. As the opening of the rent in the fabric of space-time approaches more details are becoming discernable. Our instruments have detected a distinct rumbling in the depths of the approaching wave front. We predict a large influx of Rumble Monster goodness will emerge from the anomaly at approximately 9.30 am Friday morning. There is a lot of variation in the signal - it is impossible to predict what other influences may be mixed and munged with what finally emerges into our universe. 現代において最も有名なアンダーグランド・アーティストによって再現されたダース・ベイダーのヘルメット100点が、2010年6月12日～20日まで、Freeman’s Los Angeles Auction Preview （6812 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.）において公開されます。その後、これらの作品は2010年7月10日にフィラデルフィアのFreemans’ Auctioneersにおいてオークションにかけられます。

ベイダープロジェクトはDKE ToysのDov KelemerとSarah Jo Marksによって立案されたもので、そのコンセプトはとてもシンプルです。現在活躍する100人の傑出したアンダーグランド・アーティストやデザイナーがそれぞれの感性を活かして、実物大のダース・ベイダーのヘルメットを作り上げるというものです。KelemerとMarksは次のようにコメントしています。「2005年に浮かんだ素朴なアイデアが2009年には記録的な展示へと成長し、このプロジェクトから生れた作品がいよいよ世界へと飛び出す時が来ました。この優れた芸術作品を初めて一般にも広く入手いただけるようご協力いただいたFreeman’sに感謝しています」。

Since the dawn of this new millennium an outstanding number of Japanese Character creators have emerged whose primary medium of expression is Japanese Vinyl. The Japanese vinyl figure has a 40 year legacy which attests to its integrity and durability as an artistic medium. In our on-demand fast turnaround post-modern world, the means of production have been made available to independent artists who can now create smaller runs than demanded by the tool and die mentality of the previous century. This further evidenced by the increasing number of creators worldwide who crossing over from the mass produced milieu of the factory back to the province of the craftsmen of Japan's vinyl trade.

Millennial Monsters will be a series of exclusive releases from Fig-lab of recent original Japanese vinyl figures in a signature color way. Many of the figures chosen for the series have been sculpted and painted by the artists themselves. All are self-financed labors of love. The objective of the series to highlight some of these outstanding creators, producers and their endearing characters. In addition to the releases themselves, effort will be made to showcase the the backstories of the characters, a history of the figure and an insight to the creative process of each artist.

The first three releases from the series will be available in San Diego at the Onell Design/GFS2009 booth (#4937)

The name of the series is an unabashed homage to the book Millennial Monsters: Japanese Toys and the Global Imagination by Anne Allison, which is the most outstanding book I have ever read about post-war Japanese society and its relationship with the west through toys, characters and entertainment.

The Symposium will be a 5-day session with a variety of panels and presentations. GSF2009 is graciously hosted by Onell Design and Callgrim at the San Diego Convention Center (SDCC#4937) . Don 'Datadub' Kratzer - Director of the International Figure Research Laboratory - will be giving the keynote and holding daily morning sessions on recent trends in figure culture from the far east. Afternoon sessions will feature many illustrious guest speakers and special exhibit. The final day will be an open day workshop to recap everything that was covered during the Symposium.

Since the release of the original STAR WARS movie in 1977, Topps has brought the magic of the big screen to the tiny trading card, inspiring millions of kids worldwide and defining a genre. In the following 30 plus years, Topps has continued to push the boundaries with such innovations as widescreen cards, foil stamps, and motion cards, evolving far beyond the old wax paper and crappy gum packets of yesteryear.

Enter the Sketchcard. With the release of 2004's Clone Wars series, Topps once again raised the bar by introducing 1 of 1 artist interpretations drawn directly onto blank cards. Short packed in with the regular cards, these are very rare, highly sought after mini works of fine art. PRESS RELEASE: LOST JADE MONGOLION FOUND!!

San Francisco, CA. Thought to be lost in the tomb of Ghengis Khan, the Jade Mongolion Idol was recently discovered. It is believed to have magical powers and it is said that anyone that possesses it will wield the strength of the mighty Ghengis Khan army. It was recently discovered by the famous archeologist Alexander Banned in a remote cave somewhere in the Khentii Mountains in Mongolia earlier this year. This rare artifact is currently on display under glass and heavy security at Super7 in San Francisco, CALIF.

KAIJU BLUE

Now this what Tokyo has been hankering for!. An upscale Kaiju gallery on the first floor of a high end Womens Fashion Department Store in the heart of the Shinjuku Shopping district. KAIJU BLUE is on the first floor of the newly remodeled Marui One and re-opens on February 20, 2009. Kaiju Blue is billed as a shop specializing in Sub-Culture AND Underground. Not quite sure what all that encompasses but they had me at Kaiju. Add to this an interior conceptualized by MOGraphixx - known for his 3d work for KAWS & T9G - and a logo designed by graphic character mavericks the Mad Barbarians and I think this may just be the tipping point for the burgeoning Haute Coutre Soft Vinyl Monsters movement. The real jewel at the heart of the shop will be the "gallery" display case and will feature a different Kaiju Maker each month.

First out of the gate is perennial Dark Horse Blobpus - with his Dissection Exhibition. There will be 2 exclusive figures released and lots of new customs on display.

T x T Project: T9G's revenge on the Helper

So what comes around goes around. After Tim Biskup had a go at remixing T9G's Rangeas to great effect last year, T9G strikes back with his own special blend of Kaiju magic on Mr. Biskup's helper.
The sculpt was debuted at the recent T X T exhibition at STITCH in Daikanyama Tokyo. Bringing a Seventies Guy-in-a-rubber monster suit sensibility to the figure, T9G knocks it out of the park. The helmet factor with the cute over the ugly is what I really does it for me. Looking forward to seeing this figure come out.

The show is on until Feb 22. at Stitch
